Located in the historical town or Newbury, a short distance from the M4, the chequers hotel is a perfect base from which to explore the Berkshire county, Thames Valley, and the beautiful Cotswolds which are not too far away.
Historic sites abound including both Highclere Castle, the home of the hit TV series Downton Abbey also Donnington Castle, built in the 1300’s and a prominent stronghold in the first English Civil War. Other historical sites include Shaw House an Elizabethan mansion featuring early H-Plan symmetrical architectural design; the Gothic St Nicholas Church and the West Berkshire Museum.
But if you are attracted to more sporting pastimes, there are a variety of golf courses in the area and, of course Newbury is best known for its racecourse and it’s famous race day’s.
Newbury is situated in the heart of the Berkshire countryside, surrounded by many areas of outstanding natural beauty, perfect for relaxing strolls or trekking and exploring.

Visit Highclere Castle
Explore the world of Downton Abbey and visit the actual filming location of the hit series and film. If Downton Abbey isn’t your thing, why not explore the story of Tutankhamun from the eyes of the man who discovered his tomb – Lord Carnarvon.
Newbury Racecourse
Enjoy a day out at the famous racetrack, in the heart of the horse racing county of Berkshire, frequented by many famous faces including the Queen. Not only can you enjoy this fantastic sport, but the course also plays host to many other spectacular live events – Including Olly Murs on the 14th of August and Rick Astley on the 18th of September.
Golf Courses
Challenge yourself on one of Newbury’s many courses, each with it’s own unique and picturesque surroundings. Choose from Newbury and Crookham Golf Club, Donnington Grove Golf Club and Donnington Valley Golf Club, or if you are staying with us a couple of nights why not try all three?
Donnington Castle
Take a short walk up to Donnington Castle a former stronghold during the first English civil war in the 15th Century. From this vantage point you can enjoy beautiful vistas across Newbury and the valley.
Shaw House
Once a school, this picturesque Elizabethan property has more to it than meets the eye. Just a short walk or drive from the hotel explore this fantastic building, it’s garden’s and history.
Kennet and Avon Canal
You can take a barge trip or simply walk along these historic waterways, or if you are feeling adventurous why not kayak or canoe? Our water ways run through the town of Newbury in which we are situated, and out into the stunning Berkshire countryside, home to lot’s of wildlife.
